Smoky Quartz
Smoky Quartz is the light brown to nearly black variety of quartz. Black crystals are properly called morion, and transparent, water-rounded cobbles from Caringorm, Scotland are called cairngorm. The color of the crystals may be associated with traces of iron oxides or aluminum. Smoky quartz is relatively abundant, and is sometimes made by irradiating clear rock crystal to turn it dark brown. Oppositely, sometimes very dark crystals will be heat treated to give it a lighter, more yellow hue, which may then be sold as the more valuable citrine. Fine specimens may be found in the Swiss Alps, Pike’s Peak in Colorado, and in North Carolina.
