Rutilated Quartz
Rutilated quartz (SiO2 with TiO2) is a variety of quartz, taking its name from the needles of rutile that are enclosed within it. It is generally transparent, and the amount of needles ranges from just a few to so many the stone may appear nearly opaque. The needles may occur as sprays (multiple radiating from a single point) or randomly scattered throughout the crystal. The color of these inclusions is usually yellow, but can also be red which may sometimes appear black without the aid of proper light. Black tourmaline, green actinolite, and green chlorite needles are also found encased in quartz similar to rutile needles. The prime locality for rutilated quartz is Novo Horizonte, Bahia, Brazil.
Rutilated quartz is also known as Venus’ hairstone.
